Hats off to Con Mum (Netflix) – I got duped too. I spent a good 85 of its 90 minutes making notes to myself like, “Follows the scam documentary play-book TO THE LETTER” and, “Title kind of gives the game away”. But then I didn’t see the kicker coming.
When you find out what it is, it is the mouldy cherry on top of an already very soggy, miserable cake. Con Mum is mostly a very sad film. In July 2020, TV pastry chef and co-founder of Longboys Doughnuts Graham Hornigold received a message that he had been waiting for all his life. The email was from a woman called Dionne who said that she was searching for her son who had been taken away from her aged two. She looks very much like his long-lost mother, and Graham rushes up to meet her in a Liverpool hotel. She is also extremely loaded. And she has six months to live.
